Peter Taylor

Musical Director

Peter Taylor joined the newly formed SingSoc in his first week as a fresher studying Environmental Geosciences in 1998. He joined the committee as social secretary in his first rehearsal despite knowing no-one there! He was then Chair for two years and formed Socii Cantorum before moving home to the Midlands in 2001. He gained a Postgraduate Diploma in Vocal and Operatic Studies from the Birmingham Conservatoire and in 2003 the committee invited Peter to return to SingSoc and take up the post of Artistic Director.

Peter has been delighted to conduct SingSoc in performances of Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, Haydn’s The Creation, Poulenc’s Gloria, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Andrew Carter’s Benedicite, Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Coronation Anthems, and Fanshawe’s African Sanctus as well as many other concerts of mixed repertoire.

Peter is passionate about educating people in the art and science of singing and particularly in encouraging the next generation of choral singers. For many years he has had a thriving business teaching singing from his home in Sheffield, and has in the past taught first study singing students at both Sheffield and Nottingham Universities. Peter spent eight years as Singing Project Co-ordinator for Sheffield, working for Sheffield Music Hub, where he had responsibility for ensuring that every child in Sheffield had regular quality opportunities to sing throughout their school life from age 5 to 18. He now works as Education and Development Partnerships Lead for Out of the Ark Music, where his mission is to bring joy and musical learning into the daily school life of every child through the promotion of singing as a central language of learning in every primary school.
